Yea, but Avs also don't level. Not to mention Avs also get to deathloyal their equipment.
I honestly don't see what the big deal with DTs are. There should really be no reason for people to wander into them very often. If you're new to the area, keep your eyes open and try reading descriptions. If you aren't new to the area, then you should know it's there and be able to avoid it. Essentially they are there to enforce the need to actually look around and read. People are constantly missing key points in the areas because they simply wander through trying to map the area (in their mind or otherwise) and pay no attention to what's actually going on. At least, that's how I see their existance. _________________ "Eye level for a kender is door-lock height for the same reason a chipmunk has extra cheek space."

Hey, you get no argument from me there.
But they could still carry out that purpose AND leave a corpse. |

I just think that "you shouldn't let bad things happen to people cause they might log off" is a very short-sighted approach to game design. |

The way I look at it is more if you were putting in deathtraps from scratch right now, what justification would there be for them not to leave a corpse? |

The last time I was playing I hit two DTs in the same area one day apart. After re-equiping myself the first time (and with the first DT i lost several mob run items) I ran into the DT in about the same location. Both times it was do to careless keystrokes(I typed n then enter then w by mistake instead of nw, &c). I normaly read the rooms and do all the fun stuff and know my way around areas, but the DTs that I hit are usualy just due to poor typing skills. The mud can become exciting. When you are hunting down a person or trying to quickly retrieve something for a friend carelessness can send you into a dt.
I forgot what point I was going to make with this, but let's pretend that it was a decent one and well recieved.
Besides, anal probes seem to be more popular than death traps, and we all know only Akastron likes anal probes, so that has to say something. |

That would be a good example of a poorly designed deathtrap without enough warning. If you'd give us a more descriptive location of this dt we would likely look into it and make it less sudden and lame.
I personally don't like the whole, "You fall down a hole and die!! ONOES!" It seems rather lame to me as most players have fly or float on and falling off a mountain or down a hole wouldn't do squat. That's why, if I make a place where a player could die from a fall, I actually MAKE A FALL. Several rooms with no floors which deliver significant damage if a player without fly wanders into it. In general a lot of DTs are kind of lame. It's hard to really come up with logical death where spells a player has on wouldn't effect the situation. But if you can't come up with something better than "You fall down and die" then the DT probably shouldn't be included in the area. _________________ "Eye level for a kender is door-lock height for the same reason a chipmunk has extra cheek space."

A Long Fall and a Sudden Stop...
You curse yourself for your lack of caution as the ground beneath
your feet crumbles away, just inches from the lip of the crevace.
Much to your dismay, the utter darkness and falling debris sends
your senses into discord. Even if you could fly, you don't know
which direction is up! Your fall ends abruptly as you hit bottom,
crushing bones and turning organs to a fine soup.
^ Example of the only kind of falling DT that works. Oddly enough, written by me I'll find a bad DT example later.
If any of you find any bad dts, let me or G (or any other admin) know. _________________ "Sleep well, sweet child... the lord holds thee now." |

"Even if you could fly..."?
I'm a dragonhalf
Yet another example of how *all* dt's are lame and don't contribute anything useful (or logical) to the MUD experience. |

Well I cant very well say "dispite the fact you could fly"
because some people cant and dont walk about with fly on...
mind you i could write a very interesting greet program in the room giving a message about wiether or not you're flying... hmm... _________________ "Sleep well, sweet child... the lord holds thee now." |

I don't see how your example is supposed to be a good fall to your death dt. It doesn't seem any different from the other ones I dislike. _________________ "Eye level for a kender is door-lock height for the same reason a chipmunk has extra cheek space."

This one actually provides a reason for the inability to fly.
Most are just like you fall... damn, you're dead. _________________ "Sleep well, sweet child... the lord holds thee now." |
